Mark Zuckerberg sees himself made of a hologram!

Hologram meetings will be possible in the future according to Mark Zuckerberg, a statement that the boss of Meta recently made twice. First, to American comedian Joe Rogan on his world-famous podcast, The Joe Rogan Experience. Then he did it again in an interview on Stratchery, another podcast, with host Ben Thompson, an American business and technology analyst.

Zuckerberg obviously met these two people to announce the plans for his new project at Meta, formerly known as Facebook, and the name change reflects its latest ambitions.

Mr. Zuckerberg renamed the social media platform's parent company Facebook on October 28, 2021, and converted it to Meta in reference to the”Metaverse“- a combination of social media and virtual and augmented reality. At that point, the company started operating under the name “Meta Platforms,” of which “Meta” is the short form. What used to be “Facebook-first” started reorienting itself to the metaverse from then on, gradually abandoning the integration of Facebook with its other services.

The reason, as we know today, was the realization of what Zuckerberg hopes will be the future of interaction between social media and virtual reality.

The hologram is indeed a project!

During Mr. Zuckerberg's second interview with Ben Thompson, the media technician enthusiastically outlined his vision for the future, which he said was “entirely focused on human contact.” Even their meeting on the podcast, he said, would take place in “augmented reality” using augmented reality glasses. They would even be able to do things like manipulate objects in 3D. Moreover, he enthused, “there is nothing that, in my opinion, would prevent us” from getting there in just five years.”

How does that work? Easily, it seems, at least for the founder of Meta. Thompson, for example, could stay in his office in Taiwan and Zuckerberg in his office in California. Nonetheless, they could still interact “virtually.”

Mr. Zuckerberg is not the only one who thinks that 3-D virtual reality communication could be the new way forward. Academics and psychologists, for example, recently diagnosed what they call “Zoom fatigue,” which they say is one of the most common side effects of the pandemic.

It has become so common, in fact, that Jeremy Bailenson, a professor at Stanford University, published an article on this subject in 2021. He proposes several practical solutions, the most surprising of which consists in replacing flat screens with 3D representations. According to him, this would eliminate most of the problems.

When Bailenson spoke in 2021, the technology had not yet been developed. However, if Mr. Zuckerberg is interested, Mr. Bailenson's suggestion could become more than just a wish. It would become reality, even if it is only virtual or augmented.

Virtual reality or augmented reality?

Virtual and augmented reality is a concept that Mr. Zuckerberg has been promoting for some time now. Indeed, he believes in it so much that he has completely changed the brand and direction of his business to that end.

This month, Zuckerberg's company launched what he calls the”Quest Pro“, Meta's first helmet. The price is $1,500, which may seem like a hefty price for many. But the object is worth it, says the CEO of Meta, because it is designed for “collaboration, creativity, and task completion.”

To further justify, he explained how the ability to converse with someone in virtual reality was “the ultimate expression of the type of services we've been building for eighteen years now.”
